Lafayette Public Library Locations Reopen at Noon on Monday, May 18

The Lafayette Public Library will reopen to the public at noon on Monday, May 18. All library locations will open with regular hours with the exception of the Butler Memorial Branch which will remain closed. The Chenier Branch Library’s temporary business hours will be Monday – Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM.

The library expects to accommodate all visitors within the 25% of building occupancy guidelines but may limit patrons in certain areas to accommodate social distancing where there if high usage, such as children’s departments.

Patrons are encouraged to keep their library visits short, observe social distancing guidelines, and wear face masks. The library asks that children age 12 and under be accompanied by a parent or guardian since children’s activities are limited. All programs for the month of May have been cancelled.

Fines are not being charged at this time and all returned materials are being quarantined for 72 hours. There is no charge for copies, prints, or faxing at this time. Copies and prints are limited to 5 pages per patron per day.

Library computer use is limited to two hours a day per person with about half of the computers available with distance regulations in place. Patrons must use their own headphones. Makerspace equipment is not available for public use at any location.

Reservations for a study room may be made in person or over the phone only. Study rooms will be limited to two people. No reservations are being taken for meeting rooms at this time. No tours, groups, or gatherings will be allowed at the library.

“We are excited to be open again, but safety of staff and patrons is important to us,” states Library Director Teresa Elberson. “We are busy working on new program ideas for the summer for all ages. Reading and fun learning activities are the focus this summer as we get ready to launch our new Summer Reading Challenge for the community.”

Patrons are encouraged to continue using our online resources, download books and magazines, use drive-thru services to pick up their holds, and phone and email services from home.

If you need help in finding something to read, place a hold, or need info on how to download a book or audio, we are here to help. Call 261-5787 or your closest location for assistance.
