California Makes it Legal to Eat Roadkill

Governor of California, Gavin Newsom has signed a bill that would allow people to legally collect and eat roadkill.

Senate Bill 395 was designed to eliminate the waste of wild game meat unintentionally killed on roadways.  According to the new law:

“Each year it is estimated that over 20,000 deer alone are hit by motor vehicles on California’s roadways.  This potentially translates into hundreds of thousands of pounds of healthy meat that could be used to feed those in need.”

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife will develop an app that allows people to post the details about the unintentional kill of an animal so that they can then harvest it and cook it.
