7-Eleven Starting to Use Mobile Self-Checkout

A few participating 7-Eleven stores in New York City are now using a mobile self-checkout system that allows customers to use their mobile phones to make a purchase before exiting the store without ever having to interact with a cashier.

Here’s how it works:

  • The customer scans the bar code on the item using the 7-Eleven mobile app to make a purchase.

  • A QR code is then given on the app that the customer scans at a ‘confirmation station’ so that the store knows the customer is not shoplifting

Certain purchases will still require the assistance of a cashier.  For instance, customers will still have to confirm their age with a cashier to purchase alcohol.  After successful testing in Dallas, the company is now implementing the service around New York City.  Depending on how popular the system is with customers, more stores may be willing to embrace the technology.
