The 1976 release,”Greatest Hits 1971-1975″ by The Eagles has officially surpassed sales of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to become the best selling album of all time in the U.S.
With 38 million copies sold, “Thriller” officially takes second place with 33 million copies. The Eagles’ 1977 release, “Hotel California” is now ranked as the third best selling album as 26x platinum.
According The Hollywood Reporter, prior to 2013, platinum status was equivalent to selling one million albums or songs. Incorporating digital music services like YouTube and Spotify 1,500 streams of an album is equivalent to an album sale and 10 song downloads equal one album sale.
The Eagles were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and received the Kennedy Center Honor in 2016.
