The devastating wildfires on the island of Maui have left behind burned-out cars and piles of rubble where historic buildings once stood. At least 53 people have died, 271 structures have been damaged or destroyed, and dozens of people have been injured. Residents described a harrowing escape as they fled their homes, and thousands of tourists have been advised to stay away. The fires were whipped by strong winds from Hurricane Dora, and experts say climate change is increasing the likelihood of such events. The Hawaii National Guard has mobilized Chinook helicopters to help with fire suppression and search and rescue efforts. Former President Barack Obama said it’s tough to see the images coming out of a place that is so special to many.
