New York Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed outlawing new gas stoves, gas hot water heaters, and oil furnaces in both new homes and commercial construction by the end of the decade. The “New York Housing Compact” also urges citizens to get rid of their gas appliances in favor of electric appliances.
Earlier in the week, reports were published by multiple media outlets of the Biden administration’s desire to ban gas stoves. Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission claimed studies showed gas stoves emit an unsafe about of pollutants and that banning them could be an option. The White House later pushed back against the idea and claimed that the administration did not want to ban the appliances.
“The president does not support banning gas stoves,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Wednesday.
Hochul’s proposal came one day before the administration’s denial.
In December 2021, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a bill that aimed to phase out the city’s fossil-fuel heaters and required all new buildings to be fully electric by 2027.
