District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser has mandated that all students will need to have the COVID-19 vaccine to attend school and there will be no virtual option offered for those that do not take it.
Mayor Bowser made the announcement on Thursday. When asked what the plan was for students who did not take the vaccine, the Mayor indicated there was no plan and that families must comply as there would be no remote learning offered.
“We’re not offering remote learning for children, and families will need to comply with what is necessary to come to school,” Bowser asserted.
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education for DC said in a statement that,
“all students must have up-to-date immunization certification on file with the school within the first 20 school days or they will not be allowed to attend school or school activities until the immunization certification is secured by the school.”
The mandate applies to private schools as well as public schools.
On the same day of the announcement, a DC Superior Judge ruled that Mayor Bowser’s previous vaccine mandate for government workers is unlawful.
