Hank Azaria Will No Longer Voice Apu on The Simpsons

After years of backlash, voice-actor Hank Azaria says he will no longer voice Apu on The Simpsons.

The character of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is an Indian American convenience-store proprietor, a role that critics say promotes racism and negative stereotypes.  Azaria says the team came to the decision to no longer have him do the voice for the character.  There’s been no mention of what will happen to the character in the show.

“What they’re going to do with the character is their call, it’s up to them, they haven’t sorted that out yet,” Azaria said of “The Simpsons” team. “All we agreed on is that I won’t do the voice anymore. We all had made the decision together, we all feel it was the right thing and good about it.”

A 2017 documentary entitled, “The Problem With Apu,” explored the aspects of the criticism.
