State tax incentives and collaborative efforts increase film activity in Lafayette

In the past few months, three film production companies have made Lafayette their temporary home resulting in ten films either in production or scheduled for production this year.

From the official press release from Lafayette Consolidated Government

These companies are boosting Lafayette’s economy through production costs, renting local facilities and providing jobs for citizens of Lafayette. Additionally, the movies feature local businesses and assets as settings in the films, helping to promote Lafayette to a global audience. The increase in film activity is partially due to state tax incentives and collaborative efforts through Mayor-President Joel Robideaux’s cultural economy initiative, known as CREATE (Culture, Recreation, Entertainment, Arts, Tourism and Economy).

State film tax incentives, which went into effect in January, provide an additional 5% tax credit for films made outside of the New Orleans MSA, as well as other incentives, giving filmmakers the opportunity to receive up to 40% in tax credits for making movies throughout Louisiana in places like Lafayette.

It looks a lot like Christmas in June with decorations along Jefferson Street downtown and other areas of town, including Acadian Village’s Noël Acadien au Village.  Some of the films will be Christmas movies that are scheduled to air later this year.

The CREATE office is creating a film resource package which will be available online to assist in communicating information for potential productions.
