Tuna’s Q&A

What do you love about music?

Music is emotion.  Music takes me immediately to memories and to reminiscing.  Songs can grab you when you hear them.  Depending on your memories, you always stay passionate about them.  Music moves the soul.

What do you like about being on the radio?

As a young boy, I was a radio junkie. I would listen to the men and women on the radio for hours, they were my friends and family, even if they didn’t know me.  So I hope when you are listening to my show, you think of me that way.  Like we are talking and drinking coffee at their kitchen table, or a beer while waiting on the next batch of Crawfish to come out the pot.  I want to be right there with you.  Turn it up.

Being on the air at Big 102.1 is a different kind of job.  What’s it like to have such an unusual job where you play music at work?

The old joke I would always say when people asked me why I work in radio was “Well, My Mom said I had a big mouth and radio seemed like the perfect fit for me.”  I love what I do, whether it is playing music, or working through tropical weather events, or doing play by play for Football games…I consider it an honor to be on the radio…it’s sort of sacred with me.  It’s a responsibility to help you enjoy this.  Music, emotion, joy, escape.  That is why I am passionate and thankful every day to do this on Big 102.1.

Who is your all-time favorite singer?

Wow, just one?  I like a lot of different music.  It may surprise you; Frank Sinatra, the Chairman. The way he could emote what the lyrics were supposed to mean, was one of the many reasons he was the best.  Honorable mention: Freddie Mercury…what a vocal range and what a talent.

What do you think makes being on the air in Lafayette so different than any other part of the state?

Come on, if you listen to Big 102.1, you know.  Lafayette is like a Gumbo…. there are many different beliefs, backgrounds, traditions that make up the ingredients… and the friendliness and love here in Acadiana, is the roux that makes it all come together.  I moved here for college in 1988…I’m a proud Ragin’ Cajun and I have never thought about going back since. I love this area, it’s different from anywhere else in the state and in the country. I just love the people. I can’t wait to play music for you every day.

Big 102.1 makes a big deal out of playing such a rich variety of superstar artists and different kinds of songs, how do you feel about playing so much music on the air in Lafayette?

Can I call it a Buffet for Your Ears??  That is what I get to play every day I am on the radio…you flip on Big 102.1 and we give you Louisiana’s Greatest Hits, the songs and artists that we’re all passionate about and can’t get enough of.  And they just keep coming.  Also, we want you to enjoy as much as you like, with so many great musical entrees for you to keep filling up your playlist plate.  Count the songs.  You’ll be busy listening to Big 102.1.

When you are on the air, how do you make it special for someone just tuning in to Big 102.1?

If you’re at work or at home or running around I like being in your car or truck with you.  I hope I make you smile when you listen.  Maybe you’ll laugh. We sincerely try make you feel like you are a part of our family..because you are.  You can trust me with your time, which is precious, and I hope when you listen to me on Big 102.1 you feel like you are getting away from it all.  I always end my show with these 4 words and I mean it every day…”I Love You Acadiana.” Come on board for the win!  We’re gonna have fun.
