Debris Clean-Up Guide for Lafayette

From Lafayette Consolidated Government:

Disposal of Storm Debris by Burning is Prohibited

Lafayette Fire Department (LFD) is reminding residents of Lafayette Parish to refrain from burning storm debris or open burning following Hurricane Delta.

Burning storm debris within city limits is a significant fire hazard, LFD Public Information Officer Alton Trahan explains, “With current conditions, these type of fires have a tendency to spread to nearby structures or large open fields causing substantial damage and utilizing manpower. Residents should not dispose of yard debris by burning.”

Open burning is also illegal according to Section 74-38 of the Lafayette Parish Municipal Code. The reduction or disposal of all forms of solid waste by incineration or burning is prohibited in the service area, unless allowed by and performed in accordance with other provisions in this Code.

Importance of Properly Discarding Storm Debris

Hurricane Delta caused a significant amount of wind damage throughout Lafayette Parish, leaving many residents with yard debris. It is essential that residents separate items by category before placing them curbside.

Because area landfills are only permitted to accept certain materials, not all debris is taken to the same location. Properly separating items allows crews to determine where debris will be taken, and it helps pickup happen in a more timely manner. Crews are only removing yard debris at this time. After clearing all yard debris, contract crews will begin pick-up of other types of storm debris.
