Woman Busted, Cut Off Her Hand for Insurance Fraud Scheme

A court in Slovenia has sentenced a woman to two years in prison for deliberately cutting off her hand to make a fraudulent insurance claim.

According to court documents, 22-year-old Julija Adlesic agreed with her boyfriend’s scheme to have her left hand severed above the wrist in an effort to make a fraudulent insurance claim.  While the woman claimed innocence during the trial, prosecutors said that days before the incident, Adlesic’s boyfriend searched the internet for information on how artificial hands work.  Authorities say the couple left the severed hand behind rather than bringing it to the hospital to ensure that the disability would be permanent.  Police did recover it and it was reattached.

The woman signed contracts with five different insurance companies and stood to collect more than 1-million euros.  Instead, she was found guilty of attempted insurance fraud.  She was sentenced to 2 years in prison.

Her boyfriend was sentenced to 3-years in prison and his father received a1-year suspended sentence.
