American Airlines Warns of Staff Reduction, Says Overstaffed by about 8,000

American Airlines Group Inc says it’s overstaffed by about 8,000 flight attendants.

The company has warned of reductions to its workforce due to the coronavirus outbreak.  U.S. carriers have warned of furloughs that could take place in October when the federal government’s payroll assistance expires.

American Airlines will reduce its international and transcontinental crew to the minimum required by the Federal Aviation Administration, plus one flight attendant effective in October.  The company hopes reductions come from early retirements and voluntary leaves.
