The Bonnet Carre Spillway Could Be Opened This Week

The Bonnet Carre Spillway could be opened this week to divert part of the Mississippi River’s flow into Lake Pochartrain.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will decide whether or not to open the spillway by Friday.  Heavy rains along the mid-Mississippi and Ohio river basins are causing water levels to rise.  The river is expected to crest above 17-feet in New Orleans as early as Friday.

This would be the first time the spillway is opened 3-consecutive years.
