LCG: Try Not to Overload System with Trash While Staying Home

With the public self-quarantining at home to help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, Lafayette Consolidated Government along with Republic Services has offered pointers to keep residents from overloading the system with trash.

Republic Service Trash and Recycling Collections

As we deal with COVID-19, more Lafayette Parish residents are staying home, leading to an increase of household garbage collected curbside. All garbage and recycling trucks out on the road fill up faster, forcing the drivers to leave their routes more often to unload.

Lafayette Consolidated Government and Republic Services are asking residents to cooperate to help continue with uninterrupted services and to protect employees along their collection routes.

Bess Foret, LCG Environmental Quality Manager says “LCG and Republic services are doing everything we can to make sure service is not delayed or interrupted during this unprecedented time. We are asking residents to be mindful of not overloading the system and facilitating the collection by adhering to a few guidelines. “

  • As usual, all garbage should be bagged. Do not put loose garbage in carts. Loose items are likely to fly out of carts, causing Republic Services’ staff to handle the items. Although employees wear gloves, LCG and Republic Services want to limit direct contact with trash, potentially exposing employees to COVID-19.

  • As people are generating more trash, carts are being overfilled, preventing lids from closing. To ensure the lid is fully closed, please avoid overfilling, which leads to spillage.

  • Generating more trash, customers have resorted to using recycling carts as a second garbage can. This has led to contaminating recyclables that must be dumped at the landfill, instead of taken to and processed at a separate facility. Please, use carts for their intended use. Put trash in the trash cart and recycling in the recycling cart.

  • Since the priority is collecting garbage, if you have yard waste or bulky items curbside, be patient with collection time.

The Compost Facility will not offer compost until the Governor John Bell Edwards’ stay-at-home order is over.

As always, citizens can call 337-291-8529 to report a missed collection, a broken cart or for any other questions or concerns.
