Lafayette-native, Dustin Poirier is headed into the biggest fight of his career. Poirier won the Interim UFC Lightweight Championship in April of 2019. The previous champion, (27-0) Khabib Nurmagomedov, had been temporarily suspended after a controversial incident outside of the octagon after Nurmagomedov’s successful title defense against Conor McGregor. Now that Nurmagomedov is back, he’ll face-off against Poirier to unify the UFC Lightweight Title this Saturday, Sept. 7th, 2019 at UFC 242.
Leading up to the big fight, Poirier has used his position as a champion to help change the world. Poirier’s “The Good Fight“ is helping to rebuild a water supply in Uganda after a torrential flood ruined a water source for a community. His kind nature and charity efforts have led many fans to call Poirier a “peoples’ champion.”
“I am a fighter. It’s what I do. I want to use my platform to fight for as many people as I can.” – Dustin Poirier
Still, the toughest test has yet to come for Poirier. The undefeated Nurmagomedov plans to regain what he feels is rightfully his. Both fighters have exciting stand-up skills and the fight will most certainly be one of the most entertaining on the card.
