Elon Musk says a monkey has been able to control a computer with its brain during Neuralink testing.

Neuralink was created by Elon Musk in 2016 and consists of a chip and electrodes implanted on the brain.  The idea is to create a brain-computer interface.  Musk explains that using keyboards and smartphones is a slow, low-bandwidth way of interacting with the internet.  While Musks’ ultimate goal is merging with artificial intelligence, the program is initially looking to help treat various brain disorders, such as Alzheimer‘s and Parkinson‘s disease, by allowing the brain to use electrodes to stimulate neurons and nerve cells.

Sounds like sci-fi hogwash, right?

It’s not.  In fact, the Neuralink team has seen a lot of success by conducting tests on rats and monkeys.  In a press conference on Tuesday, Elon Musk let it slip that

“A monkey has been able to control a computer with its brain, just FYI.”

The team wishes that they didn’t have to conduct tests on animals and hopes to start human testing before the end of next year.
