New In Theaters This Weekend (12/21/18)

Creed 2  (PG-13)  Trailer 1 and Trailer 2

Dolph Lundgren returns as Ivan Drago, the guy who killed Apollo Creed in “Rocky IV”.  He blames Rocky for his family being disgraced after he lost to Rocky in Russia 33 years ago . . . and plans to get revenge by having his son Viktor take down Adonis.

A Romanian boxer named Florian “Big Nasty” Munteanu is Viktor Drago.

Florian was actually too big for the part and had to lose weight to make it as realistic as possible.

 

Obviously, Michael B. Jordan is back as Adonis CreedPhylicia Rashad returns as his mom, and Tessa Thompson is his pregnant girlfriend Bianca.  Sylvester Stallone also helped write the script with “Luke Cage” creator Cheo Hodari Coker.

 

Robin Hood  (PG-13)  Trailer 1 and Trailer 2

This new remake stars Taron Egerton as Robin Hood and Jamie Foxx as the Moor who trains and fights alongside him under the alias Little John.  The Sheriff of Nottingham is Ben Mendelsohn . . . the guy who built the Death Star in “Rogue One”.

An Australian comedian named Tim Minchin is Friar Tuck, Bono’s daughter Eve Hewson is Marian, and “50 Shades” star Jamie Dornan is her HUSBAND Will Scarlet.

 

Ralph Breaks the Internet  (PG)  Trailer 1 and Trailer 2

John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman are back as Ralph and his glitchy racing friend Vanellope.  In this one, they risk leaving the arcade to search the World Wide Web for a replacement part to her video game after its steering wheel controller breaks.

They get help from Taraji P. Henson and Gal Gadot.  Taraji plays an Internet algorithm that determines trending videos, and Gal Gadot is a racer in a game called Slaughter Race.  Jane Lynch and Jack McBrayer get some screen time too.

Green Book expands to 1,000 theaters.

It stars Mahershala Ali from “House of Cards” as Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class black pianist who hires a bouncer from the Bronx to drive him through the racially-charged deep south in 1962.  Viggo Mortensen plays his hired muscle.

The title is from a handbook that black motorists relied upon to guide them to the few safe places African-Americans could visit to avoid discrimination.  It’s a serious movie from Peter Farrelly, the guy who did the “Dumb and Dumber” movies.  (Trailer)

 

The Favourite opens in four theaters on Friday.

Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are competing for the favor of Queen Anne in the early 18th century.  Rachel is basically running the country while England is at war with France, and Emma grabs power by getting in a sexual relationship with her.

Queen Anne is played by Olivia Colman, the actress who’ll be taking over the part of Queen Elizabeth in the upcoming third season of “The Crown”.  Rachel’s character, Sarah Churchill, was an ancestor of Winston Churchill.  (Trailer)

The Front Runner expands to 500 theaters on Friday.

Hugh Jackman plays Senator Gary Hart, the guy whose 1988 presidential campaign went up in flames after he was caught in a sex scandal.  Vera Farmiga plays his wife and Sara Paxton plays his side action Donna Rice.  (Trailer)

Becoming Astrid is a foreign language movie that opens Friday.

It’s about Astrid Lindgren, the Swedish children’s author who created “Pippi Longstocking”.  Alba August from the Netflix series The Rain plays Astrid as a young woman and Alicia Vikander’s mom Maria Vikander is Astrid when she’s older.  (Trailer)
