LPD Trunk or Treat

The Lafayette Police Department (LPD) will host its second annual Trunk or Treat event on Halloween night.

This fun event provides a safe environment for families to enjoy Halloween festivities and offers children the opportunity to meet local officers in a comfortable setting.

Unlike traditional door-to-door trick or treating, attendees will collect sweet treats and other goodies from the trunks of decorated LPD squad cars. Children grades K-5 are encouraged to dress in costume and trick or treat from LPD Officers who will also be in costume passing out candy and treats. Candy donations are compliments of The Millennial Networking Group and The705.

A variety of public safety vehicles will be on display for an up-close look and the horses from LPD’s Mounted Unit will also be on hand to visit with the children and their parents. Fun jumps and complimentary pizza and drinks (while supplies last) will round out the evening at this free event.

The event will be held in the parking lot adjacent to LPD headquarters (900 E. University Ave.) on October 31 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Participants are asked to park on the street in the neighborhood within walking distance of the event.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Parents are reminded of the standard precautions to assure a safe and enjoyable Halloween and Trick or Treating:

  • Be sure to be seen – Carry flashlights or glow sticks and add reflective tape or reflectors to dark colored costumes

  • Consider face paint and decorative hats as alternatives to masks that can limit or block eyesight

  • Wear flame retardant costumes and only carry costume props constructed of cardboard to avoid injury

  • Travel in groups under the supervision of parents or guardians

  • Use sidewalks where available, stay to the side of the road and watch for cars

  • Stay in familiar neighborhoods and only visit familiar homes with porch lights on

  • Adults should inspect all treats prior to the children enjoying them

  • Give and accept wrapped or packaged candy only

  • Drive cautiously in neighborhoods and areas where children may be trick or treating
