The NY Post is reporting a Towson, Maryland hospital reported a mother to the state because she tested positive for opiates as she was giving birth. The mother told the state that she ate a poppy seed bagel before going to the hospital. The poppy seeds caused a false positive test result. The woman got her daughter back as the case was dismissed.
Snopes,the fact checking website states “that the consumption of poppy seeds used on bagels and muffins can produce positive results on drug screening tests is true.”
The NY Post also reported that a Department of Correction officer, Eleazer Paz used the same defense and was exonerated by an administrative law judge. The Department of Corrections Commisioner still fired Paz anyway. Labcorp, who conducted the drug test said the positive results were inconsistent with digestion of poppy seeds.
