8/1/18 – UPDATE

According to the San Antonio News Express:

Leon Valley Police Chief Joseph Salvaggio said Monday evening that the man, who was not been identified, confessed to stealing the shark.

The shark had been snatched out the tank, wrapped up in a blanket and pushed out of the aquarium in a baby stroller Saturday afternoon, Salvaggio said.

The 38-year-old man faces a charge of theft between $750 and $2,500, police said. He said police expect to charge another two people.

San Antonio Aquarium assistant husbandry director Jamie Shank said the horn shark, Helen, a female less than a year old, was determined to be in good condition.

In what was an end to “Shark Week,” two thieves stole a 3-foot horn shark from it’s tank in the San Antonio Aquarium in Texas.  According to surveillance footage, two men and a woman pulled the shark from it’s tank, swaddled it in a blanket like a baby, and pushed it out in a stroller.  Police are still trying to track them down with the footage.

Horn sharks can only survive out of water for maybe an hour or two and need to be in warm salt water.  There’s a very good chance that the shark did not survive.
